SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Drought Decision-Making Tools You Can Use
DESCRIPTION:Host: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\,  \nPresenters: Rebecca Ward\, North Carolina Assistant State Climatologist\, Katherine Hegewisch\, Research Scientist at the University of Idaho\, Jeff Marti\, Drought Coordinator\, Washington Department of Ecology \nAbstract:  \nLearn about two toolkits that support drought monitoring and drought decision-making across the lower 48 states: the Integrated Water Portal and The Climate Toolbox. \nThe Integrated Water Portal brings together water data from several different agencies into a map-driven data exploration and visualization tool that is designed to support drought monitoring at state and basin scales. This site allows users to quickly explore regional and local water conditions with a focus on surface and near-surface supplies. \nThe Climate Toolbox is a set of mapping/graphing tools that can be used to explore climate/hydrology data in real-time with comparisons to the past and insight into the future (sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasts and future projections) at gridded locations. \nThe presentation will also feature users’ perspectives\, including how the State of Washington’s Drought Coordinator uses The Climate Toolbox for state drought monitoring. \nAdditional information about the webinar can be found here.

SUMMARY:SFE Webinar: Prescribed Fire in Piedmont Hardwoods
DESCRIPTION:A free two hour webinar from the North Carolina Prescribed Fire Council\, the Southern Fire Exchange\, NC State University\, and the University of Florida. \nSociety of American Foresters CFE Credit Expected. \nPresenters:\nSharon Bischof\, North Carolina State Parks\nChris Moorman\, NC State University\nDan Dey\, US Forest Service Northern Research Station \nWebinar Description: There is increasing interest in using prescribed fire to restore and maintain Piedmont ecosystems dominated by hardwood species. This webinar will address several topics relevant to those using prescribed fire in Piedmont hardwood ecosystems\, including the history of North Carolina Piedmont hardwood ecosystems\, wildlife impacts for game and non-game species\, and silvicultural considerations. This webinar is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Prescribed Fire Council\, but will cover information relevant for fire practitioners in many areas of the South. A subsequent field tour in Central North Carolina will be scheduled once restrictions related to COVID-19 have been lifted. Following the presentations there will be time for audience Q/A with the speakers. \nRegistration is required. Registration link.

SUMMARY:SFE Webinar: LANDFIRE Remap in the Southeast
DESCRIPTION:A free one hour webinar from LANDFIRE\, the Southern Fire Exchange\, and the University of Florida. \nPresenter: Jim Smith\, Ph.D.\, TNC LANDFIRE Director \nWebinar Description: LANDFIRE Remap is a multi-year effort to improve the usability of the product suite by recreating base LANDFIRE products using new plot information\, new imagery and production techniques. Presenter Jim Smith\, TNC LANDFIRE Program Lead\, will review LANDFIRE product offerings\, describe what has changed\, what has not changed from previous versions\, and provide information on future program plans\, all from the perspective of a user in the Southeast US. Following the presentation there will be time for audience Q/A with the speaker. \nFollowing the webinar there will be time reserved for audience questions. \nRegistration required. SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Clarifying Science Needs for Southeastern Grasslands: The Piedmont\, Coastal Plain\, and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Host: South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative \nPresenters: \nJennifer Cartwright\, USGS Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center\nDwayne Estes\, Southeastern Grasslands Initiative\nRua Mordecai\, South Atlantic Conservation Blueprint \nAbstract:  \nGrasslands are plant communities that have few or no trees\, or have open canopies that allow for the development of a grassy groundcover. Grasslands in the southeastern U.S. support rare plant and animal species and in some cases qualify as global or regional hotspots of biodiversity. Yet the Southeast’s grasslands have been reduced by approximately 90% since European settlement\, as the result of agriculture\, urbanization\, and fire suppression. Today\, climate change represents an additional stressor that may pose direct and indirect threats to grassland-related biodiversity. We will discuss results from a region-wide workshop of scientific and conservation professionals exploring the challenges to grassland species conservation in the southeastern U.S.\, with emphasis on clarifying the research and data needs of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and state agencies related to Species Status Assessments (SSAs) for imperiled grassland species. We will then focus in on challenges in the Piedmont – a region with one of the greatest declines in grasslands across the entire Southeast. \nAdditional information about the webinar can be found here.
