SUMMARY:2026 Red Hills Fire and Nature Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Red Hills Fire & Nature Festival\, hosted at Tall Timbers\, returns on February 7\, 2026 from 11:00 to 3:00. This all-ages fun educational event about prescribed fire and its benefits is hosted in the Red Hills on even years. \nThe Fire & Nature Festival is free and open to the public. It’s an all-ages good time with live music\, prescribed fire demonstration\, live wildlife\, wagon ride tours of healthy\, fire-maintained forests\, kids’ activities\, and food vendors. The Red Hills Fire & Nature Festival happens through the collaborative effort of over 30 organizations pulling together around the central understanding that fire is a critical part of land stewardship in our region. \nFor more information\, visit the Facebook Event page.

SUMMARY:SFE Pine Rocklands Fire Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Pine Rocklands Fire Science Workshop\nLessons from Fire Science Research and Adaptive Management\nFebruary 18-19\, 2026\, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nUF/IFAS Extension Miami-Dade County Office\, Homestead\, FL\nOptional field trip on February 20th\, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\, to the Richmond Tract of pine rocklands belonging to Zoo Miami. \nDescription:\nPine rocklands are a critically-endangered tropical ecosystem with dozens of rare and endangered species\, many of which are endemic to the ecosystem itself. This ecosystem and its denizens are fire-maintained and adapted\, but due to historical fire suppression and development\, many of the remaining fragments of pine rockland are degraded and surrounded entirely by urbanization. In response to needs expressed by the pine rockland community in Miami-Dade County\, FL\, Southern Fire Exchange has created its inaugural Pine Rockland Fire Science Workshop to help address some of the unique challenges of prescribed burning in urban\, pine rockland fragments. Some of the topics covered include the reintroduction of fire in long-unburned systems\, smoke management in the wildland-urban interface\, and the science of public communication. See the agenda for more information about workshop content. \nPurpose:\nConnect wildland fire practitioners\, natural resource managers\, and conservationists with the tools\, resources\, and knowledge to reintroduce fire into long-unburned pine rockland fragments with consideration for the wildland-urban interface. \nRegistration and More Information

SUMMARY:SFE and CAFMS Duff in the Mountains Fire Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Duff in the Mountains Fire Science Workshop\nLessons from Fire Science Research and Adaptive Management\nFebruary 24\, 2026\nHenderson County Center\, Hendersonville\, North Carolina\nAfternoon field trip at the Green River Game Lands \nThe Consortium of Appalachian Fire Managers and Scientists and the Southern Fire Exchange will be hosting a Duff in the Mountains workshop on February 24\, 2026. The workshop will be hosted in Hendersonville\, North Carolina at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s Henderson County Center. There will be a field trip portion at Green River Game Lands. \nDescription:\nReintroducing fire into long-unburned forests has led to unexpected tree mortality. In many cases\, valuable overstory trees\, important for wildlife habitat and cultural history\, have died following prescribed burns due to large accumulations of soil organic horizons\, often referred to as duff. Sites with heavy duff loads continue to present persistent and pressing challenges for prescribed fire managers in the montane region of North Carolina. Research funded by the Joint Fire Science Program has revealed that thick layers of dry duff around tree bases ignite and burn slowly\, damaging roots\, causing stress\, and resulting in tree death. These findings shifted fire management strategies toward gradually reducing duff layers rather than immediately restoring open forest structure. This workshop\, hosted by Southern Fire Exchange and the Consortium of Appalachian Fire Managers and Scientists\, will support this approach by providing scientific presentations\, field demonstrations\, and planning tools to help land managers assess duff conditions\, plan effective burns\, and protect legacy and economically important trees. Emphasis will be placed on practical\, low-cost techniques\, like duff moisture testing and multi-stage burns\, making fire science accessible and actionable for a wide range of landowners and fire practitioners. \nPurpose:\nConnect landowners and fire professionals with the tools\, resources\, and knowledge to reintroduce prescribed fire to long-unburned areas with significant duff layers.Desired Outcomes \n\nIncrease understanding of duff fire science\, including the science that links duff and tree mortality.\nFacilitate conversations between researchers and fire practitioners to inform smoke management in high-duff areas.\nIncrease understanding of duff fire management and mitigation practices\nEvaluate specific duff management practices for the montane region\n\nRegistration and More Information \nAgenda
