SUMMARY:SFE Pine Rocklands Fire Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Pine Rocklands Fire Science Workshop\nLessons from Fire Science Research and Adaptive Management\nFebruary 18-19\, 2026\, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nUF/IFAS Extension Miami-Dade County Office\, Homestead\, FL\nOptional field trip on February 20th\, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\, to the Richmond Tract of pine rocklands belonging to Zoo Miami. \nDescription:\nPine rocklands are a critically-endangered tropical ecosystem with dozens of rare and endangered species\, many of which are endemic to the ecosystem itself. This ecosystem and its denizens are fire-maintained and adapted\, but due to historical fire suppression and development\, many of the remaining fragments of pine rockland are degraded and surrounded entirely by urbanization. In response to needs expressed by the pine rockland community in Miami-Dade County\, FL\, Southern Fire Exchange has created its inaugural Pine Rockland Fire Science Workshop to help address some of the unique challenges of prescribed burning in urban\, pine rockland fragments. Some of the topics covered include the reintroduction of fire in long-unburned systems\, smoke management in the wildland-urban interface\, and the science of public communication.
