SUMMARY:SFE Webinar: Low-Severity Fires Protect Carbon Stores in Global Peatlands
DESCRIPTION:Host: Southern Fire Exchange\, Duke University\, University of Florida. \nPresenter: Neal Flanagan\, Ph.D.\, Duke University \nAbstract: \nSevere wildfires can cause smoldering ground fires that oxidize entire carbon stores and threaten peatlands around the globe. However\, low‐severity surface fires can physically protect soil organic matter by thermally altering surface carbon chemistry\, thus creating a slower cycling carbon pool that positively affects long‐term carbon balances in peatlands worldwide.

SUMMARY:Wildland Fire Investigations Training
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: The Wildland Fire Investigations course is based on the recently developed certification standards and training programs for wildland fire investigators put in place by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG). This program culminates in a six hour practical exercise where students work as a team to investigate and document a wildland fire case. Teams will determine the fire origin\, collect evidence\, conduct interviews\, and document the case. Wildland fires result in tremendous devastation of public resources and private property. The increasing frequency of these types of fires has brought on a need for additional\, specially trained fire investigators. \nPrerequisites: Successful completion of the National Fire Academy NWCG S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (Q0901-S190) course prior to attendance. This course can be found at the following link: NFA NWCG S-190 Intro to Wildland Fire Behavior. \nCertificate is to be submitted at the time of registration. Email certificate to arson@gpstc.org \nWho Should Attend: Certified Fire Investigators currently working in an investigative capacity for an agency tasked with the responsibilities to investigate wildland fires and establish cause and origin at wildland fire scenes. Applicants may also be fire management personnel who have responsibilities for the investigation of wildland fires.

SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Perspectives on Prescribed Fire Management in Longleaf
DESCRIPTION:Host: South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative \nPresenter: John Kupfer\, University of South Carolina \nAbstract:  \nLongleaf pine ecosystems are iconic systems of the southeastern United States that historically contained a spectacular diversity of plants and animals. These habitats have\, unfortunately\, been degraded and reduced to a small fraction of their former extent through a century of landscape conversion\, logging\, and fire suppression. In response\, many agencies\, NGOs\, private landowners and businesses have committed to longleaf pine restoration\, with prescribed fire serving as one of the primary tools in such efforts. However\, the use of prescribed fire to maintain or restore biodiversity and historic ecological conditions in longleaf pine ecosystems while also reducing wildfire risk may be increasingly difficult as the longleaf landscape is becoming more developed and projected climate changes are expected to restrict prescribed burning opportunities. \nHere\, we present the initial results of a survey designed to provide baseline information on the criteria used for prioritizing potential burn sites\, current burning practices and limitations\, and expectations for future changes in burning constraints. Based on responses from more than 300 fire managers across the Southeast\, our results clarify overall patterns and subregional trends in the seasonal and diurnal timing\, goals\, and associated risk calculations associated with their longleaf pine burn programs and point toward a number of challenges that regional fire managers expect to face over the next 50 years. \nAdditional information about the webinar can be found here.

SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC Prescribed Burning Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Host: Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC \nPresenters: Naomi Stephens (NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service)\, Prof Ross Bradstock (University of Wollongong)\, Dr Hamish Clarke (University of Wollongong and Western Sydney University)\n \nAbstract:  \nA website specifically designed for fire and land managers\, the Prescribed Burning Atlas is a tool to inform prescribed burning strategies and tailor them to outcomes that will best reduce the risk in a target area within available budgets. Backed by eight years of CRC research incorporating thousands of fire simulations\, the Atlas compares the level of risk reduction achieved from different combinations of prescribed burning techniques and compares the costs of different mitigation options and their effect on reducing the likelihood of life loss\, property loss and environmental values\, as well as the effects of climate change on prescribed burning effectiveness. This webinar will provide you with the full details and a guided tour of the Prescribed Burning Atlas\, explaining how the website can support organisations to make the best decisions about where and how to undertake prescribed burning for different areas across New South Wales\, the ACT\, Victoria\, Tasmania\, South Australia and Queensland. \nAdditional information about the webinar can be found here.

SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Clarifying Science Needs for Southeastern Grasslands: The Piedmont\, Coastal Plain\, and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Host: South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative \nPresenters: \nJennifer Cartwright\, USGS Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center\nDwayne Estes\, Southeastern Grasslands Initiative\nRua Mordecai\, South Atlantic Conservation Blueprint \nAbstract:  \nGrasslands are plant communities that have few or no trees\, or have open canopies that allow for the development of a grassy groundcover. Grasslands in the southeastern U.S. support rare plant and animal species and in some cases qualify as global or regional hotspots of biodiversity. Yet the Southeast’s grasslands have been reduced by approximately 90% since European settlement\, as the result of agriculture\, urbanization\, and fire suppression. Today\, climate change represents an additional stressor that may pose direct and indirect threats to grassland-related biodiversity. We will discuss results from a region-wide workshop of scientific and conservation professionals exploring the challenges to grassland species conservation in the southeastern U.S.\, with emphasis on clarifying the research and data needs of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and state agencies related to Species Status Assessments (SSAs) for imperiled grassland species. We will then focus in on challenges in the Piedmont – a region with one of the greatest declines in grasslands across the entire Southeast. \nAdditional information about the webinar can be found here.

SUMMARY:North Georgia Prescribed Fire Council Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The North Georgia Prescribed Fire Council will meet June 4 online via Zoom. Register online here. Additional details can be found below. \nThe Georgia Prescribed Fire Council\, a statewide coalition of land managers\, landowners\, forestry consultants\, conservation organizations\, universities\, and state and federal agencies promotes the safe use of prescribed fire as an essential natural resource management tool to ensure ecosystem health and reduce wildfire risk. The first North Georgia Prescribed Fire Council meeting was held in 2019 at North Georgia Technical College in Jasper Ga with 200+ in attendance. The Council had plans to hold the 2020 North Georgia Prescribed Fire meeting on Thursday\, June 4\, 2020 but due to the COVID 19 restrictions on large groups\, the 2020 meeting will be a virtual meeting using ZOOM technology. There will be a normal full agenda of speakers with live interaction from the audience available for questions and comments. ZOOM is very easy to use and there will be technical help for any issues. The 5-hour meeting\, with breaks\, will address critical issues for prescribed fire practitioners and advocates\, with a special emphasis on north Georgia and its unique terrain\, population\, and forest types. Meeting attendees will hear from prescribed fire experts on 8 different topics as you will see on the meeting agenda. \nNorth Georgia’s public and privately-owned forestland is a significant economic\, biological\, recreational\, and aesthetic resource. Carefully planned prescribed fires prevent the build-up of flammable\, naturally-occurring fuels that set the stage for destructive wildfires. Prescribed fire also helps ensure healthy habitat for plants and animals\, including rare and endangered species in Georgia. \nContinuing Forestry Education and Master Timber Harvester credits will be available for those participating in the full conference. \nJoin us on June 4th at 10:00 AM on your computer or other device to learn about the state of prescribed fire in North Georgia.

SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Air Quality and Healthy Hearts - Progress and Remaining Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Host: US EPA Air and Energy Research Program\n \nPresenters: Dr. Wayne Cascio\, director of EPA’s Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment (CPHEA)\, Dr. Ana Rappold\, CPHEA statistician\, and Dr. Cavin Ward-Caviness\, CPHEA computational biologist. \nAbstract:  EPA’s Office of Research and Development\, Air and Energy National Research Program is working to assess the impact and improve our understanding of air pollution morbidity and mortality in vulnerable populations\, including individuals with cardiovascular disease. Exposure to airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with adverse cardiovascular health events including heart attacks\, stroke\, and death―particularly among those with pre-existing conditions. However\, a better understanding of the relationship between air pollution and cardiovascular health is needed to develop strategies to protect vulnerable people with heart and vascular disease. \nThis webinar provides an overview of newly published research by EPA scientists and their colleagues that helps fill key knowledge gaps. The findings\, published in leading scientific journals\, offer new insights into the progress made to protect at-risk individuals with chronic health problems. The research also identifies remaining environmental health challenges\, such as determining risks faced from sustained exposure to elevated PM2.5 from wildfire smoke\, which is being observed due to more frequent and larger wildland fires in the United States. \n\nAdditional information about the webinar can be found here.

SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Fighting Fire with Fire: Restoring Traditional Indigenous Practices for Ecological Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Environmental Law Institute Webinar: Fighting Fire with Fire: Restoring Traditional Indigenous Practices for Ecological Stewardship \nPanelists:\nCynthia R. Harris\, Director\, Tribal Programs; Deputy Director\, Center for State\, Tribal\, and Local Environmental Programming\, Staff Attorney\, Environmental Law Institute\, Moderator\nMichael Connor\, Partner\, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP\nFrank Lake\, Research Ecologist\, US Forest Service\nMatthew S. Reischman\, Assistant Deputy Director\, Resource Protection\, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection\nBill Tripp\, Deputy Director of Eco-Cultural Revitalization\, Karuk Tribe Department of Natural Resources \nWebinar Description: In 2018\, six wildfires in California caused approximately $12 billion in property damage and tragically claimed over a hundred lives. As climate change continues to drive hotter\, drier\, and more combustible conditions\, the fire season in the western portion of the United States is becoming longer\, more intense\, and costlier. \nFor millennia\, indigenous peoples have used prescribed fires – intentionally setting precisely timed\, low-intensity fires to clear biomass – as a means to manage forest ecosystems as well as being an important cultural practice. Historically\, as non-indigenous people expanded westward\, state and federal authorities effectively banned tribes from this practice. \nClick here to Register by May 19 \nFor more information Click here.

SUMMARY:SFE Webinar: Longleaf Pine Forest Patch Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:A free one hour webinar from Tall Timbers Research Station\, the Southern Fire Exchange\, and the University of Florida. \nPresenter: Kevin Robertson\, Ph.D.\, Fire Ecology Program Director\, Tall Timbers Research Station\, Tallahassee\, FL. \nWebinar Description: It has long been observed that longleaf pine juveniles (between the “grass stage” near the ground to about head-high) tend to become established in dense clusters limited to open areas away from canopy trees. Recent detailed fire history mapping efforts at the Wade Tract in south Georgia\, have shown that longleaf pine regeneration tends to occur within canopy gaps that experience lower fire frequency and severity. This research has implications for fire management for longleaf pine regeneration\, suggesting that burning under conditions that allow for some patchiness following longleaf mast years (abundant seed production) is important for natural recruitment. \nFollowing the webinar there will be time reserved for audience questions. \nRegistration required.
