SUMMARY:SFE Webinar: Growing-Season Prescribed Fires & Ground Nesting Birds
DESCRIPTION:Growing Season Fire & Ground-Nesting Birds – Answers for Longleaf Restoration\nHost: Tall Timbers Research Station\, the Southern Fire Exchange and the University of Florida. \nPresenter: Jim Cox\, Tall Timbers Research Station \nAbstract: Millions of dollars have been spent over the past 20 years on reforestation of longleaf pine forests. Restoration will take time coupled with frequent and repeated application of prescribed burning. Burning is absolutely critical to restoration\, but an appreciable number of individuals and groups now limit their opportunities to burn to a smaller and smaller burn window. The concern often voiced is that burning from April – July is detrimental to ground nesting/grassland birds and should be avoided. Restoration targets that require frequent burning and may not be achieved if the burn window becomes too narrow. This presentation will look at the science behind the use of fire during the “lightning season” (the months of April – July) and its effects on ground-nesting birds such as quail and Bachman’s sparrow.  Following the presentations there will be time for audience Q/A with the speaker. \nRegistration Required: https://ufl.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_lGveI7-rQFqRq1NtsdgG8w

SUMMARY:Prescribed Fire Science Workshop: Increasing the Pace and Scale of Prescribed Burning
DESCRIPTION:The Prescribed Fire Science Workshop is a series of virtual events\, trainings\, and networking opportunities that will connect fire scientists and land managers with the goal of increasing the pace and scale of prescribed burning in the northeastern United States. This series will lay the groundwork for continued exchange between scientists and managers\, including more virtual events and (eventually!) at least one in-person meeting that will feature a prescribed burn (RxB). \nThis series will: \n\n\nraise awareness of how evidence-based prescribed fire can be used as a tool to create safe\, resilient\, fire-adapted landscapes \n\n\nempower participants to use modern scientific tools that will help them safely implement prescribed burns in their home units \n\n\ninform decision-makers about how they can incorporate science-driven management decisions into their legislation \n\n\nshowcase New Jersey as an example of science-based fuels management \n\n\nParticipants can register for one of two tracks for this series: \n\n\nA la carte registration: this option allows for maximum flexibility and a smaller time commitment\, with invitations to attend the series’ overview events \n\n\nFull registration: this option asks participants to participate fully in all interactive seminars and includes access to all series events \n\n\nBoth options are free of charge\, but pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Workshop: How to optimize fire education courses for a virtual environment
DESCRIPTION:In a pandemic environment\, remote learning is becoming a necessity for NWCG (National Wildfire Coordinating Group) courses. To help keep firefighters fireline-ready\, instructors need to adapt traditionally in-person courses for non-traditional classrooms. This training will be co-instructed by North Atlantic Fire Science Exchange Network communications and education specialists and Northeastern Forest Fire Protection Compact training working team members with decades of experience in fireline instruction. This workshop will give fireline course instructors the tools they need to confidently and independently apply best practices to teach traditionally in-person courses in a digital environment. \nThis training will include:\n– Fundamentals of virtual teaching and learning\n– Adaptations and best practices for fireline teaching\n– Practice preparing and implementing a lesson plan in the virtual environment \nWorried about being on Zoom for a few hours? Don’t be! We have strategically placed breaks included in the agenda. In addition\, this is an interactive training – we expect all participants to fully dive in and generate ideas so they can walk away with an action plan. While we understand that distractions sometimes come up\, we will ask everyone to model engaged student behaviors. Participants will be expected to use video and audio to interact with the workshop instructors and in small groups. \nREGISTER HERE \nPlease note that the following pre-reading is required in order to fully participate in the workshop:\n– Pre-course Materials (read linked articles as applicable)\n– Instructor checklist\n– Student checklist

SUMMARY:EPA Tools and Resources Webinar - Air Pollution and Heart Disease
DESCRIPTION:Host: EPA Office of Research and Development\n \nPresenter: Wayne E. Cascio\, Ph.D.\, Director of the Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment\, EPA Office of Research and Development \nAbstract: \nOver the past 50 years to meet its mission of protecting human health and the environment\, EPA has worked to ensure that all Americans have access to clean air\, land and water. Environmental law\, policy and science have afforded the U.S. improved environmental quality across all media with attendant benefits to human health. Advances in clinical and population-based research methods\, engineering\, technology and medicine have increased our knowledge of air pollution and its constituents\, the way the pollution is generated and moves in the atmosphere\, as well as the impacts this pollution has on human health and ecosystems. Air research conducted and funded by EPA’s Office of Research and Development has contributed substantially over the past 50 years to establishing the Clean Air Act’s National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Research has linked regulated air pollutants such as ozone and particulate matter (PM) to lung and heart disease and other health problems. This research is in-part responsible for increasing the average life expectancy of Americans by approximately five to eight months according to findings from a 2009 EPA-supported study. This webinar will discuss the parallel progress of EPA science\, the evolution of the technology used for studying air quality and health\, and our understanding of heart disease\, improvement in air quality and human health. \nRegistration Required: https://epawebconferencing.acms.com/tools_august2020/event/registration.html

SUMMARY:Ecological Society of America 2020 Conference
DESCRIPTION:  \nConference theme: “Harnessing the Ecological Data Revolution” \nAbstracts are due April 30th. \nLike many science fields\, the ecological sciences are being flooded by massive and diverse sources of information. For example\, remote sensing platforms\, automated sensors\, observatory networks\, molecular techniques\, large-scale or replicated experiments\, and predictive (simulation) models are generating enormous amounts of data over time and/or across space. Such big and diverse data are opening up new avenues of research and enabling ecologists to address more complex questions and hypotheses that\, for example\, span multiple scales and disciplines. However\, this information deluge also creates challenges in terms of methods available for harnessing the information contained in such data and tools for effectively communicating big data issues and results. The 105th annual meeting encourages contributions that address these issues or that employ novel and integrative approaches to harnessing the data revolution to address pressing issues in ecology.

DESCRIPTION:Host: Southern Fire Exchange\, Duke University\, University of Florida. \nPresenter: Neal Flanagan\, Ph.D.\, Duke University \nAbstract: \nSevere wildfires can cause smoldering ground fires that oxidize entire carbon stores and threaten peatlands around the globe. However\, low‐severity surface fires can physically protect soil organic matter by thermally altering surface carbon chemistry\, thus creating a slower cycling carbon pool that positively affects long‐term carbon balances in peatlands worldwide.

SUMMARY:Wildland Fire Investigations Training
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: The Wildland Fire Investigations course is based on the recently developed certification standards and training programs for wildland fire investigators put in place by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG). This program culminates in a six hour practical exercise where students work as a team to investigate and document a wildland fire case. Teams will determine the fire origin\, collect evidence\, conduct interviews\, and document the case. Wildland fires result in tremendous devastation of public resources and private property. The increasing frequency of these types of fires has brought on a need for additional\, specially trained fire investigators. \nPrerequisites: Successful completion of the National Fire Academy NWCG S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (Q0901-S190) course prior to attendance. This course can be found at the following link: NFA NWCG S-190 Intro to Wildland Fire Behavior. \nCertificate is to be submitted at the time of registration. Email certificate to arson@gpstc.org \nWho Should Attend: Certified Fire Investigators currently working in an investigative capacity for an agency tasked with the responsibilities to investigate wildland fires and establish cause and origin at wildland fire scenes. Applicants may also be fire management personnel who have responsibilities for the investigation of wildland fires.

SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Perspectives on Prescribed Fire Management in Longleaf
DESCRIPTION:Host: South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative \nPresenter: John Kupfer\, University of South Carolina \nAbstract:  \nLongleaf pine ecosystems are iconic systems of the southeastern United States that historically contained a spectacular diversity of plants and animals. These habitats have\, unfortunately\, been degraded and reduced to a small fraction of their former extent through a century of landscape conversion\, logging\, and fire suppression. In response\, many agencies\, NGOs\, private landowners and businesses have committed to longleaf pine restoration\, with prescribed fire serving as one of the primary tools in such efforts. However\, the use of prescribed fire to maintain or restore biodiversity and historic ecological conditions in longleaf pine ecosystems while also reducing wildfire risk may be increasingly difficult as the longleaf landscape is becoming more developed and projected climate changes are expected to restrict prescribed burning opportunities. \nHere\, we present the initial results of a survey designed to provide baseline information on the criteria used for prioritizing potential burn sites\, current burning practices and limitations\, and expectations for future changes in burning constraints. Based on responses from more than 300 fire managers across the Southeast\, our results clarify overall patterns and subregional trends in the seasonal and diurnal timing\, goals\, and associated risk calculations associated with their longleaf pine burn programs and point toward a number of challenges that regional fire managers expect to face over the next 50 years. \nAdditional information about the webinar can be found here.

SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC Prescribed Burning Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Host: Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC \nPresenters: Naomi Stephens (NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service)\, Prof Ross Bradstock (University of Wollongong)\, Dr Hamish Clarke (University of Wollongong and Western Sydney University)\n \nAbstract:  \nA website specifically designed for fire and land managers\, the Prescribed Burning Atlas is a tool to inform prescribed burning strategies and tailor them to outcomes that will best reduce the risk in a target area within available budgets. Backed by eight years of CRC research incorporating thousands of fire simulations\, the Atlas compares the level of risk reduction achieved from different combinations of prescribed burning techniques and compares the costs of different mitigation options and their effect on reducing the likelihood of life loss\, property loss and environmental values\, as well as the effects of climate change on prescribed burning effectiveness. This webinar will provide you with the full details and a guided tour of the Prescribed Burning Atlas\, explaining how the website can support organisations to make the best decisions about where and how to undertake prescribed burning for different areas across New South Wales\, the ACT\, Victoria\, Tasmania\, South Australia and Queensland. \nAdditional information about the webinar can be found here.

SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Clarifying Science Needs for Southeastern Grasslands: The Piedmont\, Coastal Plain\, and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Host: South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative \nPresenters: \nJennifer Cartwright\, USGS Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center\nDwayne Estes\, Southeastern Grasslands Initiative\nRua Mordecai\, South Atlantic Conservation Blueprint \nAbstract:  \nGrasslands are plant communities that have few or no trees\, or have open canopies that allow for the development of a grassy groundcover. Grasslands in the southeastern U.S. support rare plant and animal species and in some cases qualify as global or regional hotspots of biodiversity. Yet the Southeast’s grasslands have been reduced by approximately 90% since European settlement\, as the result of agriculture\, urbanization\, and fire suppression. Today\, climate change represents an additional stressor that may pose direct and indirect threats to grassland-related biodiversity. We will discuss results from a region-wide workshop of scientific and conservation professionals exploring the challenges to grassland species conservation in the southeastern U.S.\, with emphasis on clarifying the research and data needs of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and state agencies related to Species Status Assessments (SSAs) for imperiled grassland species. We will then focus in on challenges in the Piedmont – a region with one of the greatest declines in grasslands across the entire Southeast. \nAdditional information about the webinar can be found here.
