SUMMARY:Partner Workshop: Groundcover Restoration & Enhancement
DESCRIPTION:Groundcover Restoration & Enhancement Workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 5\, 2023\n8:00 AM-5:15 PM\n\nAustin Cary Forest | Gainesville\, FL\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe aim of this workshop is to bring together working professionals to collaborate on current topics and research related to groundcover restoration and enhancement in Florida. Two chief topics that will be discussed at this workshop are: (1) low native seed supply and availability\, and (2) native groundcover enhancement within the urban matrix. Both topics will have a set of speakers and will be followed by panel led discussions. The goal is to foster collaborative dialogue on current issues and emerging topics. Register for the workshop: https://web.cvent.com/event/24641132-c6ad-4b05-948c-0bd8f78af9b2/summary \n\nCheck out the workshop agenda (pdf).

SUMMARY:Partner Webinar: Effectiveness of fuel treatments at the landscape scale
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, 4/5/2023\, 11am –12:30pm MDT\n\n\nRegistration Link\n\n\n\n\nMaximizing the effectiveness of fuel treatments at the landscape scale is a key research and management need given the inability to treat all areas at risk from wildfire\, and there is a growing body of scientific literature assessing this need. Rocky Mountain Research Station scientists\, in collaboration with the Joint Fire Science Network\, synthesized existing science on landscape-scale fuel treatment effectiveness in North American ecosystems through a systematic literature review. \nA recent report\, Effectiveness of fuel treatments at the landscape scale: State of understanding and key research gaps\, provides key findings from four literature synthesis documents (concepts and fuel treatment effectiveness measurements\, empirical\, simulation\, and case studies) that evaluate the extent to which landscape fuel treatments mitigate adverse effects of wildfire\, provide opportunities to manage fire for beneficial effects of wildfire\, provide opportunities for cost efficient fire suppression strategies\, maximize fire responder safety\, provide results to inform future fuel treatment planning\, and identify research gaps. \nEvent Details\nJoin the Joint Fire Science Network and Rocky Mountain Research Station for the Landscape Fuel Treatment Effectiveness webinar on Wednesday\, April 5 from 11:00 – 12:30 MT. Registration is required. \nFour Rocky Mountain Research Station scientists will present their latest research followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. \n\nLessons learned from wildland fire case studies | Ali Urza\, Research Ecologist\nQuantifying forest wildfire hazard and fuel treatment effectiveness from stands to landscapes | Sharon Hood\, Research Ecologist\nFuel treatment scenarios tested through simulation studies | Jeff Ott\, Research Ecologist\nIs there empirical evidence for landscape-level fuel treatment effectiveness? | Shawn McKinney\, Writer/Editor

SUMMARY:Partner Class: Prescribed Fire for Wildlife in Florida
DESCRIPTION:THE FLORIDA CHAPTER OF THE WILDLIFE SOCIETY AND THE FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION \nApril 25-28\, 2023 \nFFA Leadership Training Center\n5000 Firetower Road\nHaines City\, Florida 33844 \nRegistration and more information \nYour sponsors and cooperators are pleased to again host “PRESCRIBED FIRE FOR WILDLIFE” April 25-28\, 2023\, at the FFA Leadership Training Center located on Lake Pierce near Haines City\, Florida. Attendees are encouraged to stay onsite with meals and lodging provided through the duration of the course. The Florida Chapter has reserved several ‘villas’ that include single and double occupancy bedrooms and a spacious common area in each villa. If you require single occupancy\, let us know and we will do our best to honor your request. \nThis training is designed to provide land managers and wildlife stewards with basic information on wildlife habitat management practices associated with prescribed fires in Florida. It includes sections addressing how ignition plans can be developed and implemented to meet specific wildlife objectives while minimizing risk. This training combines classroom lectures\, panel discussions\, and field exercises covering a variety of wildlife and habitats. Classroom activities will be held at the Leadership Training Center. Field exercises will be held at nearby south Florida wildlands and will focus on how prescribed fire can improve and maintain valuable wildlife habitats. \nThe Florida Chapter of the Wildlife Society is handling registration and because class size is limited\, early registration is encouraged. Basic Registration is $425.00 and full registration with all meals and lodging is $775.00. The Registration deadline is March 12\, 2023. Register online via http://fltws.org/shop (state or federal pcards accepted). \nFor additional information contact: Jim Schortemeyer (239)455-5847 Schortfire@aol.com  \nREGISTRATION DEADLINE: 12 March 2023 \nWHAT YOU WILL LEARN: \nPRESCRIBED FIRE and WILDLIFE HABITAT ENHANCEMENT TECHNIQUES \n1. Review and understand basic habitat management principles as they relate to fire. \n2. Review standard habitat management and prescribed fire practices for selected wildlife species. \n3. Prescribed fire recommendations for panther and bear in Florida. \n4. Prescribed fire recommendations for quail and other small game. \n5. Prescribed fire recommendations for turkey. \n6. Prescribed fire recommendations for the Bald Eagle and Red-cockaded Woodpecker. \n7. Case studies of specific habitat management programs emphasizing prescribed fire in Florida. \nIGNITION PLANNING & IMPLEMENTATION \n1. Review and understand fire intensity and its relationship to wildlife impacts. \n2. Explore methods to regulate intensity. \n3. Discuss specific ignition techniques for a variety of habitats and fire return intervals. \n4. Techniques and considerations for re-establishment of short return intervals in fire deprived habitats. \n5. Review specific examples of problems and solutions associated with prescribed fires for wildlife in Florida.
