Rae’s research uses field data and mathematical models to examine the effects of fire season and frequency on plant community assembly and population dynamics of rare and common species.

With experience in fire ecology research ranging from remote sensing assessments of burn severity to studies of prescribed fire and forest carbon dynamics, David is excited to develop products and programs for the SFE that span the boundaries of wildland fire science and management.

Fire Ecology Program Director, Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy
Kevin’s research focuses on plant community and ecosystem ecology of the Southern Coastal Plain. As Program Director, he places a priority on research that can be applied to managing and conserving natural communities and declining species.

Joe is involved in forest management and planning worldwide, including the analytical work on seven US National Forests.

Mary Nell Armstrong, M.S.
Outreach Specialist, Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy
Mary Nell has worked on prescribed fire crews in Georgia, Texas, and Florida and on a wildfire suppression engine crew in Montana. She uses these background skills and enthusiasm for restoration to share fire science research with the southeastern fire community by producing the SFE fire science newsletter and podcast, sharing resources through SFE social media, and supporting partner agencies from across the region to accomplish mutual goals.

Elliot Nauert
Extension Associate, North Carolina State Extension Forestry
Elliot has seven years of experience as a wildland firefighter at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, specializing in managed fires for resource benefit and prescribed fire. He is excited to combine that experience with his training as a social scientist to support SFE’s communication and outreach work.
