Fuels Management Workshop and Field Tour

Landscape-scale Mechanical Fuels Reduction Treatment Effects on Fire Behavior, Fuel Loads, and Forest Ecology

In fall 2011, the Southern Fire Exchange, University of Florida’s School of Forest Resources and Conservation, US Forest Service, and Conserved Forest Ecosystems Outreach and Research Cooperative (CFEOR) partnered to conduct a workshop and field tour titled, Landscape-scale Mechanical Fuels Reduction Treatment Effects on Fire Behavior, Fuel Loads, and Forest Ecology. After introducing their research, Jesse Kreye and Leda Kobziar led more than 40 participants through a series of field locations in the Osceola National Forest to discuss study results regarding effectiveness and impacts of mechanically shredding and burning understory shrubs and small trees in pine flatwoods.

You can watch a video recording of the field tour and accompanied discussion with workshop participants. Before viewing, it would be helpful to download or print the multiple page handout (includes notes and summary) that workshop participants used to follow along with presenters and field tour stops.
