Smoke management is a critical component in prescribed burn planning. Preparing for the movement and impacts of smoke can protect both prescribed burners and the public. It is easy to understand how smoke can be a hazard. But, being smoke savvy doesn’t just mean planning for, preparing for, and actively managing prescribed fire smoke to minimize impacts on smoke sensitive targets. It also means considering your shared airshed.
Produced in collaboration with Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Forestry Commission, and Tall Timbers, the new Southern Fire Exchange publication “Be Smoke Savvy: Georgia Prescribed Fire Smoke Management Pocket Guide” explores the concept of being smoke savvy and the shared airshed. Additionally, it provides a checklist for prescribed burn managers wanting to be smoke savvy before, during, and after a burn.
