North Florida PFC Meeting Recordings Now Available
A new playlist on the SFE YouTube channel features the recorded presentations from the 2021 Fall North Florida Prescribed Fire Council meeting. The meeting was held via Zoom and speakers provided presentations covering a wide range of prescribed fire management topics. Many of the presentations will likely be of interest to those outside the state of Florida. In 1971, the Florida Park Service conducted its first prescribed fire at Falling Waters State Park in Chipley.
Fifty years later, parks director Eric Draper and a group of veteran burners gathered at Falling Waters to conduct a prescribed burn.

Job: Florida Fire Manager/North America Fire Specialist, The Nature Conservancy
The Florida Fire Manager/North America Fire Specialist is a staff member with TNC’s Florida Business Unit (FLBU). The FLBU has a long and successful history of professional wildland fire management focusing on the use of prescribed fire in maintaining pyrogenic habitats and as a tool for restoration. Fire management is conducted on and off TNC lands with partners and TNC is seen as a leader in this field. This position will be based in the FLBU’s Stewardship & Field Programs Department (SAF) and serve on the SAF Leadership Team. They will report to the SAF Dept Director with coordinated supervision with the TNC Director of Fire Management. Although this position is a staff member of the FLBU, they will provide fire management support to two other Conservancy programs: North America Fire Program (NAFP), and the General Counsel Safety and Risk Office (GCSRO). This position requires an experienced wildland fire professional who is qualified as a National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Type 2 Burn Boss (RxB2). They will be based in Florida and may work from a TNC preserve, home office, or an arranged partner location. They will be expected to travel statewide (FL), nationally, and internationally to support all three programs. The Nature Conservancy emphasizes Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice principles (DEIJ) when recruiting and implementing its conservation work.

The intent of this course is to train new firefighters in basic firefighting skills. It is often required for participation in prescribed burning activities. Participants who complete all course requirements will receive federally-recognized NWCG certificates for S-130, S-190, and L-180.
**This training is presented in a hybrid format. Participants must complete 40 hours of training total, including online material via Canvas and attending an in-person field day in order to earn NWCG certificates for S-130, S-190, L-180.**

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park manages over 21,650 acres of state land that was acquired to protect the Alachua Savannah Basin and the natural communities that surround it. This position is centered on the parks’ natural resources and will provide much needed support in achieving current and future resource management goals. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and in isolated areas. The selected candidate should be prepared to work outdoors in the Florida heat, while dealing with biting insects and other wildlife. The successful candidate will primarily operate and maintain equipment, but may identify sign and presence of exotic animals and plants, bait and monitor feral hog trapping arrays, assist in all aspects of prescribed fire, especially fireline prep, fuel treatments, equipment operation and maintenance. Equipment maintenance skills, communication skills, organizational skills and a strong commitment to the park service mission are essential.
