On 27 January 2021, President Biden issued an Executive Order on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad. This Executive Order laid out a series of actions for Federal Agencies to take regarding climate change mitigation and resilience, including directing the Secretary of Agriculture to collect stakeholder input on a climate-smart agriculture and forestry strategy. As part of this process, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking input from the public to ensure that relevant information is considered. USDA is interested in your comments in response to the topics, categories and questions shown in the Supplementary Information section of the notice.

The Longleaf Partnership Council (LPC) is pleased to announce a new communications fact sheet, Thriving on Fire: The Resilient Longleaf Pine. This informational product showcases longleaf pine’s unique tolerance to fire as well as highlights the economic and conservation benefit to planting longleaf and utilizing prescribed burning as a forest management practice.
The fire resiliency fact sheet is the third in a series of communications documents that was requested by the LPC in Fall 2017 to demonstrate how longleaf pine can outperform other pine species during natural disasters. The first communications document, Longleaf Resiliency: Insects and Diseases, was released in 2019, and the second, Blowing in the Wind: Advantages of Longleaf Pine in Wind Storms, was released in 2020.
The LPC’s sincere gratitude goes out to Lisa Lord of The Longleaf Alliance, Jennifer Fawcett of North Carolina State University Extension Forestry, and David Godwin of the Southern Fire Exchange and the University of Florida for writing and designing this document, and Evan Wheeler for literature review. The LPC is also very thankful to those who reviewed the content, and the funding partners at the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, International Paper, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Georgia Wildlife Federation.

A Prescribed Burn Association, or PBA, is a group of local landowners and other concerned citizens that form a partnership to conduct prescribed burns. PBAs are increasingly being formed and discussed in the Southeast in response to both landowner interest in conducting prescribed fire and the barriers they face in doing so. A previous SFE webinar examined recent research on the potential applications of PBAs for family forest landowners. While attending the previous webinar is not required, this event is intended to serve as a follow-up conversation and will feature a panel discussion of experts from North Carolina and Oklahoma who are involved in PBAs.
There will be an opportunity for webinar attendees to submit questions, and you may submit questions ahead of time to Laurel Kays at [email protected]. Following the presentations there will be time for audience Q/A with the speakers.
