Forest History Society Webinar Looks at the 1825 Miramichi Fire in Maine
The Forest History Society webinar series will be looking at the 1825 Maine-New Brunswick Miramichi Fire next week. If you’re already tired of the early summer heat here in the South, consider joining their webinar next week to learn about a major wildfire from nearly 100 years ago. Check out all of their past webinars on their YouTube Channel.
“Firebreak: How the Maine-New Brunswick Border Defined the Miramichi Fire of 1825”
On 7 October 1825, the Miramichi region of New Brunswick, Canada, experienced one of the largest forest fires in recorded history while, across the border, Maine suffered the most extensive fire in its history. The fires burned in the same environmental and climatic conditions, of course – and may well have been connected. Yet these fires, which consumed more than 4.6 million acres total, are largely forgotten today. Depending on which country they lived in, even the survivors remembered them very differently. Historian Alan MacEachern will describe efforts to reconstruct the fire’s history, and discuss how the international border served as a cultural firebreak, diminishing its fame in both the United States and Canada.
Alan MacEachern is the author of The Miramichi Fire: A History (2020). This webinar is approved for 1 hour of CFE credit. Register here. Direct all questions to the Forest History Society.

SFE Webinar: Forest Operations and Supply Chain Engineering to Facilitate Fuel Treatment in the Modern Bioeconomy
Join us for this upcoming SFE Webinar: Forest Operations and Supply Chain Engineering to Facilitate Fuel Treatment in the Modern Bioeconomy
Date & Time: May 11, 2023 01:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Presenter: Dr. Nate Anderson, US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station
SAF CFE Credit Expected
Description: Forest managers often struggle to meet restoration and fuel treatment goals in part because of the high cost of operations and the low market value of removals. It is frequently said that the value of biomass and small-diameter logs can generate revenue to reduce net costs, but in reality capitalizing on this possibility can be difficult and fraught with financial uncertainty and risk. This webinar synthesizes recent and ongoing U.S. Forest Service R&D studies focused on understanding industrial supply chains linked to fuel treatment. The emphasis is on tailoring forest operations, logistics and supply chain management more specifically to fuel treatments and their unique characteristics. Given the ambitious goals of initiatives like the Wildfire Crisis Strategy, leveraging the growing bioeconomy to improve the financial viability of fuel treatment will be critical to treating more acres at lower cost, and improving forest and wildfire management outcomes in the future. Following the presentation there will be time for audience Q/A with the speaker.

PBA Research Presentation: “Over the Hills and Through the Woods: Social Capital in Prescribed Burn Networks”
Check out this recorded research presentation by Dr. Aaron Russell with the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center. Dr. Russell studied how prescribed burn associations (PBAs) in Oklahoma and North Carolina work and connect. This presentation could help those who work with PBAs to think about methods for strategically expanding and improving the organizations. The recording of our February 2023 webinar “Prescribed Burning with Research and Training Objectives” with Andy Rappe from The Nature Conservancy is now live on our Southern Fire Exchange YouTube Channel. In his previous position as the assistant director of the UF/IFAS Ordway-Swisher Biological Station in north central Florida, Andy was responsible for managing an active prescribed fire management program while also supporting research opportunities for visiting scientists.
In this webinar presentation and discussion, Andy talks about his lessons as a land manager working with researchers and fire scientists. He also talks about how he learned to integrate wildland fire training opportunities with his fire management programs. This was a great webinar that touched on a lot of topics that many public land managers can put into practice.
